Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What Is Respite Care?
Respite care is a short-term break for family caregivers, providing temporary relief from the emotional and physical demands of full-time caregiving. This precious time allows caregivers to rest deeply, relieve their stress, and return to their loved one feeling recharged and renewed.
Why and When Is Respite Care Needed?
Being a full-time caregiver is one of the most loving and demanding things a person can do. For many people, it can become overwhelming and deeply exhausting, and if left unaddressed, caregiver burnout can affect the quality of care you are able to give. You deserve support too, and respite care is there for you before you reach that point.
Does Insurance Cover Respite Care?
Insurance does not typically cover the costs of short-term in-home respite care. However, depending on your specific circumstances, OHIP or other forms of insurance may cover some costs for longer-term respite support. We encourage you to contact us today and we will gladly help you understand your options.
How Long Can Someone Stay in Respite Care?
Respite care is highly flexible and can range from just a few hours to several weeks. If care is provided at home, the duration is entirely defined by you and your family’s needs. If care is provided at a long-term care facility, your loved one can typically stay for a minimum of 7 days and a maximum of 60 days.
What Should You Consider Before Starting Respite Care?
Respite care is a much-needed break, and we want it to feel as seamless and supportive as possible for your whole family. Before you begin, take time to reflect on your own needs, your budget, and the specific needs of your loved one. Allow yourself enough time to truly rest and recharge, and please share the care routines and responsibilities with us in detail so we can provide the most consistent and comforting care possible.
